This drawing reflects a special lesson I think every artist should learn.

Anyone remember my last deviation that features Arthas? [link] When I drew that one I didn't have a really good idea as to what Arthas looked like in detail. So I used a reference picture to study as I drew. The picture didn't really end up like I wanted. As I tried to redraw Arthas, I now knew what he looked like in detail, and was able to draw him without a reference picture. And surprisingly enough the image turned out better than the previous. Much better actually.

The lesson in this goes specifically to those around DeviantART who have a habit of using reference pictures in order to draw their favorite character in an attempt to get it exactly right. Don't. Sure you can practice drawing him by studying a refernece, but ultimatley using a reference image to study from will only hold you back from using your own imagination to express how you think the character should look like in your own head.

The lesson here is to learn to walk on your own two feet when it comes to fanart. Fanart isn't a bad thing. It's a wonderful form of flattery. But remember that you are trying to put a little of yourself into something you love. Let the drawing you produce reflect that as well. It will end up looking so much better.
